29/12/2014 Ian and Lesley took us for a drive to the picturesque mountain village of Harrietville, only 25 kms from Bright on the Great Alpine Road, to have an ice cream and dip our toes in the small stream that runs through the village. This stream is the headwaters of the Ovens River that flows down the Ovens Valley and through Bright, passing just behind our caravan. I was tempted to jump in and float home.
Harrietville is tucked in at the foot of the surrounding slopes of the Ovens Valley and is literally the gateway to the Alpine National Park. It is at this point that snow chains are mandatory on vehicles between June and October because of snow and ice conditions. On the far side of the village, the Great Alpine Road immediately begins its climb up the high country to Mount Hotham and beyond.
