Alexandra – Brookes Cutting Reserve (Victoria)

20/12/2014  Midway between Melbourne and Bright we camped at Brookes Cutting Reserve (Brookes River Reserve), located on the Goulburn River, a short distance outside the town of Alexandra. It was a very quiet campsite and for the three days we were alone for two. The site was very basic with no water and only a drop toilet. The only other drawback was that it was very dusty and a slight breeze would kick up a cloud of fine, white dust that quickly coated the car and van.  There were signs of recent wombat activity with large burrows on the river bank but we had no luck in seeing one. On one of our walks we came across a plum tree growing wild on the banks of a creek. Pete went into bush tucker mode and harvested a bag full for us to enjoy over Christmas. Although very small, they were very tasty. Today we celebrated our 39th wedding anniversary with a glass or two of wine as the sun set over the river.
