Car and Caravan Preparations: Checklist

1- 2 Days Prior to Each Departure:

    • Fuel level enough for next legIMG_5929
    • Gas level checked
    • Solar panels checked and cleaned
    • Drinking water tank levels checked
    • Grey water tank level checked
    • Water tank connections checked
    • Tyres inspected on car and caravan
    • Wheel bearing dust seals tight on caravan
    • Wheel nuts correctly tensioned on car and caravan

  • Caravan shock absorber bodies clean
  • Check for any supplies needed

On Each Departure Day: Caravan – Prep Inside:

  • Hats and cameras put in the car
  • Fill water bottle for inside the car
  • Fridge contents secured
  • Fridge door secured
  • Freezer door secured
  • Cupboard contents secured
  • Cupboard doors closed and locked
  • Under-bed storage contents secured
  • Hot plate turned off
  • Microwave dish secured
  • Under-seat items secured
  • Seats locked down
  • Laptop secured
  • TV secured
  • TV bracket secured
  • Tri-fold table secured for travel
  • All loose items stowed away
  • Toilet vent closed
  • Toilet lid down and secured
  • Washing machine set for travel
  • Shower head wrapped and on floor
  • Shower hatch closed
  • Shower door secured
  • Bathroom door secured
  • Bedroom fans against wall and secured
  • Lights and electronics off
  • All hatches closed and locked
  • All windows closed and locked
  • Have a last look around
  • Water pumps turned off
  • Master power switch off

Caravan – Prep Outside:

      • Toilet cassette emptied and cleaned
      • Washing taken inside
      • Clothes line stowed away
      • Antennas secured
      • Annex walls/skirt folded and stowed away
      • Awning retracted and secured
      • Awning flap secured
      • Annex flooring folded and stowed away
      • BBQ stowed away
      • Gas off and level checked
      • Power cords detached and stowed away
      • Tap fitting stowed away
      • Water hose detached and stowed away
      • Sullage hose detached and stowed away
      • Door mat stowed away
      • Tables and chairs stowed away
      • Inverter set on “Charger” mode
      • Boot contents secured
      • Brake fluid level checked
      • Cover diesel exhausts if doing a water crossing
      • Corner legs raised and secured
      • Windows closed and secured
      • Storage pod contents secured
      • Storage pod closed and locked
      • Jerry cans checked and secured
      • Locker doors closed and locked
      • Caravan door closed and locked
      • Door step raised and secured
      • Toilet hatch closed and locked
      • Outside galley secured and locked
      • Gas bottle turned off and secure
      • Have last look all around

Hooking Up:

      • Wheel chains removed and stowed away
      • Corner legs raised and secured
      • Corner leg plates stowed away
      • Coupling checked and secure
      • Coupling mounting bolts tight
      • Vehicle towbar checked and secure
      • Vehicle hooked up to caravan
      • Treg spring clip closed securelyIMG_9603b
      • Safety chains crossed and secured
      • Jockey wheel raised and secured
      • Wheel chocks stowed away
      • Caravan lights plug connected
      • Anderson plug connected
      • Camera plug connected
      • Breakaway cable connected
      • Brake fluid filler cover checked
      • Caravan park brake OFF (parallel to frame)
      • Stone deflector attached

Tow Vehicle – Prep Outside:

      • Engine – Coolant level checked
      • Engine – Oil level checked
      • Engine – Brake fluid checked
      • Engine – Wiper fluid checked
      • Lights – front – headlights working
      • Lights – front – high beam working
      • Lights – front – parkers working
      • Lights – front – indicators working
      • Lights – rear – indicators working
      • Lights – rear – parkers working
      • Lights – rear – brake lights working
      • Tyres inspected
      • Underneath inspected
      • Number plates and registration label visible
      • Body panels inspected and secure
      • Roof rack and contents secure
      • Tow mirrors secure

Tow Vehicle – Prep Inside:

      • All internal contents secured
      • Fridge running correctly
      • Hats and cameras put in the car
      • Water bottles put in the car
      • Maps close at hand
      • All gauges checked
      • Tyre pressure readings correct (TPMS)
      • UHF turned on

Before Driving Away:

      • Coupling correctly connected
      • Safety chains crossed and secured
      • Caravan park brake OFF
      • Jockey wheel up and secured
      • Stabiliser legs raised all around
      • Walk around and check everything
      • All parking lights working
      • All indicator lights working
      • All brake lights working
      • All hazard lights working
      • Caravan number plate light working
      • TPMS tyre pressures checked
      • Reverse cameras working
      • Mirrors correctly adjusted
      • Check around the site again
      • Amenities key returned
      • Family informed of next stop

After Driving Away:

      • Trailer brakes tested and working
      • Car and van sound okay
      • TPMS readings okay
      • Reverse camera working

During the Trip:

      • Do a walk-around of the rig
      • Rim temps correct all around
      • Load still secure
      • All lights still working
      • Coupling still secure
      • Safety chains still secure

First Trip:

    • Check wheel nut tension every 100km for first 400km
